There was an art gallery in Southend and when I was living there I had some paintings in it. Because I was working in adult education in London I would pass Shellhaven and Tilbury every day on the train. I approached the company, explaining that I was an artist and a photographer and could I possibly come in and do some work. They kitted me out with safety gear and I had the freedom of the docks. I was taking photographs and drawing as well at the time the regeneration of Tilbury had just started
